Cooking

In the winter months we cook on the wood stove. There is enough space on the stove surface for two pots to fit. There are metal plates that can be removed when you need to cook on higher heat. If we are cooking with a non-cast iron pot, we protect the bottom by warming the pot first and then rubbing a bar of soap on the bottom before exposing it to the direct flame. This makes cleaning the soot off afterward much easier. We also have an oven that we use for baking underneath the fire box in our wood stove. There is a thermometer on the front of the oven door so you can see when it has reached the desired temperature for baking.

In the summer months we cook using electrical appliances. We have a single burner induction stove top. Using a two burner would draw too much electricity at once, so a single burner is ideal in this situation. The heat settings are in watts, which is very helpful when you need to be aware of how much elecgtricity you are using. 300W is low, 600W is medium, and 1200W is for boiling water. We use a Nuwave for baking.
